Official data show that the growth rate of China's 2021 integrated circuit production (including integrated circuits produced by local enterprises and foreign factories) is twice that of 2020. Data released by China's National Bureau of Statistics on Monday showed that China produced 359.4 billion integrated circuits in 2021, up 33.3 percent year on year. Compared with 2020, the growth rate is significantly accelerated. In 2020, the output of integrated circuits in China will increase by 16.2%. While no official breakdown by technology node or company was provided, the figures highlight China's efforts to increase production amid a chronic chip shortage and government efforts to become self-sufficient in semiconductors. The production increase also shows that the government's efforts to keep China integrated into global supply chains are paying off. A report released earlier this month by the Us-Based Semiconductor Industry Association predicted that if current trends continue, China's semiconductor industry could account for 17.4 per cent of global sales by 2024, up from 9 per cent in 2020. That would make China the world's third-largest chip seller, behind the United States and South Korea.
According to the Semiconductor Industry Association, China announced 28 new wafer manufacturing construction projects in 2021, with a total investment of $26 billion, although many of these projects are for mature technologies such as analog chips and micro-electro-mechanical systems.
